The Gothland P18 Regiment was formed in 2018, but preparations continued since 2016 as a consequence of Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014. After a full-size Russian attack on Ukraine from 2022 on the island, military expansion was accelerated. In the process of creation, there is simply a combat unit corresponding to a reduced brigade, covering armored troops, air defense, infantry, artillery and medical care. There is besides territorial defence in Gotland.
