Jensen Huang, co-founder and CEO of Nvidia, and Lisa Su, president of the Board of Directors and CEO of AMD, were appointed to the Advisory Council of the School of Economics and Management of Tsinghua University. Marc Pictet, elder managing partner of the Swiss Pictet group, besides joined the group. The next yearly Council gathering is scheduled to take place on 13 and 14 October in Beijing.

The information was announced on 29 September by the School of Economics and Management of Tsinghua University, besides known as Tsinghua SEM.

Three fresh people and 5 changes on the company side

The Council included Jensen Huang, Lisa Su and Marc Pictet. Huang founded Nvidia in 1993 and has been acting as CEO and CEO from the beginning. Su is the president of the Board of Directors and General manager of AMD. Pictet heads the partner financial group Pictet as elder managing partner.

In the same communication, Tsinghua SEM reported 5 further changes. Milan Nedeljković of the BMW Group, John Furner of Walmart, Henrique Braun of Coca-Cola, Martín Escobari of General Atlantic and Meg O'Neill of bp include locations after erstwhile representatives of the same companies.

The Chinese Communication defines them as members of the acquiring mandate after the predecessors. This is not about alternate members or a lower category of participation. The university explained that erstwhile representatives stopped sitting in the Council due to professional changes.

What the Advisory Council does

The Advisory Board operates at the School of Economics and Management, 1 of the units of Tsinghua University. It was created in October 2000. Its task is to keep contacts between the school and business representatives, the academic planet and institutions operating outside the university.

According to Tsinghua SEM, members discuss the improvement of the school, its investigation and teaching programs, as well as their opinions on the direction of institution development. The Council does not manage Tsinghua University, does not take operational decisions for the companies represented by its members and is not the negotiating body of business agreements.

The group is dominated by leaders of global companies. The school's authoritative website besides lists university Rectors, Deans of Business Schools and Nobel Prize winners in Economics. The president of the Council since 2019 is Tim Cook, president of Apple Board of Directors. The Honorary president is Wang Qishan, erstwhile Vice-President of the PRC, and the Honorary Founder is Zhu Rongji, first dean of the school and erstwhile Prime Minister of the PRC.

Two names from the integrated circuit industry

The appointment of Huang and Su introduces to the Council 2 managers leading US processors and computing systems used, among others, in data centers and in developing AI tools. The NVIDIA and AMD compete with each another in the global semiconductor market, but their presence in the same advisory body does not alter the rules of this competition nor does it mean cooperation between companies.

The Council has been bringing together representatives of companies operating in different sectors from the outset. Its work is attended by persons related to technology, finance, industry, trade and education.

Annual gathering in October

The gathering scheduled for 13 and 14 October is to be the 27th Council conference since its inception. Tsinghua SEM organises specified a gathering erstwhile a year. On the occasion, there are usually meetings of Council members with students and lecturers, forums devoted to management and talks with Chinese entrepreneurs.

At this stage, the school gave the date of the event and changes in the composition of the committee. However, it did not confirm which members would be present in Beijing or what items would be included in the agenda.

For Nvidia, the Chinese marketplace remains the subject of separate business and regulatory decisions. We presented this in an article about the regulatory and marketplace background of Nvidia’s activities in China. Huang's appointment to the Tsinghua Advisory Council does not change these conditions. However, it extends the composition of the forum, which has been operating since 2000, to supply business school with external perspectives for its investigation and training.
