During a joint press conference of the EC Head and Prime Minister on the Polish-Belarusian border, Donald Tusk stressed the importance of this place:
"I chose this place to show what modern solidarity is today. This boundary is as crucial present as our dream of freeing ourselves from russian domination was at the time."
– We are here, at this barrier, which protects Poland and Europe from the hybrid war declared by Belarus and Russia, against illegal migration," said Tusk. He added that European allies must be "hard and determined" in negotiations with Vladimir Putin on the future of Ukraine.
The head of the Polish government besides stressed that the war in Ukraine and fresh events clearly show that no concessions towards Putin and aggressive Russia bring no security.
– adequate concessions, we must be tough and well prepared for this. Poland is well prepared, and the European Union and personally the president are besides here to find arguments to convince everyone in Europe that this border is simply a limit that we must guard, in which we must invest, besides European money," added Tusk.
Ursula von der Leyen agreed with the Prime Minister that the experience so far shows the importance of a strong army in Europe. She stressed that "Putin has not changed and will not change."
He's a predator. In the last 25 years, he has started 4 different wars. It was Chechnya, Georgia, Crimea and a full-scale invasion in Ukraine. We see that it can only be tamed by strong deterrence," said the EC chief.
For this reason, as she said, we must be "precision, coordinated and swift in enhancing security, defence throughout the European Union, especially in front countries."
