Brig-Gen Jarosław Stróżyk, Head of Military Counterintelligence Service, rejected Russian suggestions regarding the alleged participation of Polish services in the assassination of Russian General Vladimir Alexieev. "This is classical misinformation, created for interior use," said an officer in an interview with PAP.
The assassination of General Alexieev occurred on 6 February in Moscow. According to available information, the attacker fired shots in a residential building where a high-ranking Russian military intelligence officer lived. Alexeyev, 1 of the key GRU commanders, was badly injured and went to the infirmary where he underwent a life-saving surgery. The fact of the assassination itself and the identity of the victim were confirmed by the Russian side, but on this list of hard, verifiable information fundamentally ends.
Independent data are missing to clearly find the motives for the perpetrator's actions, his organisational facilities or possible links with abroad services. Nevertheless, the Russian authorities rapidly began to formulate the "external footprint" thesis, pointing first to Ukraine and then extending it to further supporting states of Kiev.
In an interview with the Polish Press Agency, the head of SKW pointed out that the accusations directed at Poland, NATO countries or the wider West are not supported by any evidence and are primarily propaganda. Their aim is to build a image of Russia as a country permanently threatened by external enemies and divert attention from interior problems. As the general stressed, this is simply a communicative addressed primarily to the Russian audience, not to the global community.
"A wider operation aimed at Russia"
In the Russian state media and communications circulated by their services, there were suggestions that the assassination would be part of a wider diversion operation conducted against the Russian Federation. In this context, the alleged participation of Poland, which, according to this narrative, was to support actions aimed at Russian military commanders, was besides started. However, these claims appeared without any evidence and were duplicated in a manner characteristic of the news campaigns conducted by the Kremlin.
Various hypotheses about the background of the assassination appear among experts active in analysing Russian information activities. 1 of them assumes that although Ukraine is carrying out activities aimed at the Russian war machine, in this peculiar case there is no data to confirm this scenario. In this perspective, the assassination could have been the consequence of interior tensions in Russian military elites and peculiar services. Competition for influences, work for failure on the front and faction conflict for years have been part of the functioning of the Russian power system, and akin incidents in the past have already been explained by specified conflicts.
The request for Guilty
As pointed out in the interview with PAP, Gen. The watchman, the framework of the Polish services, has been clearly defined. “They are implemented within the limits of the law and in accordance with the political guidelines received from the superiors – the Prime Minister, the Minister of National Defence and the Minister-Coordinator of peculiar Services, which are approved by the College for peculiar Services with the participation of the President”, stressed the head of the SKW. He besides pointed out that accusations against Poland had already appeared in the past and almost always accompanied by crisis events or hard to explain, which in the Russian public space required fast uncovering of an external guilty.
In the general's opinion, it is crucial not only to respond to misinformation but besides to rise public awareness of how specified narratives are constructed and for what purposes they serve. At the same time, he pointed out that regular commenting on each propaganda communication is not the task of peculiar services, whose function is primarily to defend State safety and not to participate in the current communicative war.
