New petroglyphs, 15 m long, depicting ships, men, horses and wagons, were discovered in the area of Fjällbacka in the Bohuslän land, reported the petroglyph investigation foundation.

The find is located precisely on the Edsten farm close Fjällbacka.

As stated by the Bohuslänu Natural Sculptures Documentation Foundation (Stiftelsen för documentation av Bohusläns Hällristningar), the recently discovered petroglyph is completely unique due to the fact that it is located at a tallness of 3 m above today's surface of the earth – on a steep stone wall which in the younger Bronze Age was located on a tiny island.

The motifs lie in 1 line that corresponded to the sea level in that area about between 800 and 700 BC; this may indicate that the sculptures were made from a boat. "Moths are besides stylistically consistent with this period", the foundation stressed.

Archaeologists believe that dating sculptures is rather precise. "We gave them according to the tallness of sea level in the Bronze Age, which was 12 m higher than today. They could not have been created sooner or later – precisely due to the level of the sea" - explained the archaeologist from the Bohuslänu Natural Sculptures Documentation Foundation, Andreas Toreld.

"We find fresh stone sculptures almost all day, but the 1 discovered on the Edsten farm in Kville parish is highly large, 15 m wide, and unique. The motifs are akin to another bronze-era natural sculptures in the area – the town of Tanum with stone art, included on the UNESCO planet Heritage List, is rather close, within 5 km. But the location of sculptures on a stone of 3 m above the ground is unique," the archaeologist emphasized.

Petroglyphs are carved in stone drawings. The word petroglyph comes from a Greek in which “petros” means stone and “glyphein” means engraved. Petroglifu should not be confused with a pictogram that is only painted on a rock.

Petroglyphs were found during the examination of the stone in the pasture. At 1 point, fragments of the ship appeared under the moss layer. A full of 13 ships, 9 horses, 4 wagons and 7 human figures were unveiled.

In the past, it was thought that petroglyphs were part of spiritual practices, but they are now believed to be a origin of cognition about cultural past and social hierarchy,” said Heritage regular in an article on discovery.

The sculptures are rather large – among them is simply a 2-meter ship and a 1-metre human figure. "Fresh stone carved sculptures obtained a whitish surface. Large images on specified a vertical stone were visible from respective 100 meters. A steep stone is directed inland, where people lived as farmers. possibly the goal was to boast about the voyages made by the sea," said the archaeologist for discipline in Poland.

Bohuslän is simply a historical land (landskap) located above the Skagerrak Strait on the west coast of Sweden, bordering north with Norway. It is named after the fortress Bohus. "Bohuslänu stone sculptures are 1 of the strangest worlds of art preserved to our time," said a retired prof. of archaeology at the University of Gothenburg, Jarl Nordbladh.

The Bohuslänu Natural Sculptures Documentation Foundation has been investigating petroglyphs since 1995. any have been known in the planet of discipline for up to 400 years, others are only discovered now. Their documenting is 1 way to preserve them for future generations," emphasises the Vitlycke Museum, which cooperates with the foundation.

As Andreas Toreld pointed out, so far we have been able to describe and make documentation of almost 3,000 sites with stone sculptures. In this about 1,000 places were discovered by the foundation. Reports of archaeological work in the field can be found on the website and on social media. (PAP)
