The United States is heavy dependent on imported minerals, should halt threatening Canada and Greenland and focus on investing in natural materials, reports Bloomberg.
U.S. president Donald Trump had previously signed an executive regulation aimed at expanding mining in the United States to reduce the country's dependence on imports. According to the decree, the US will increase mining of minerals specified as gold, uranium, copper, potash and others.
"The United States remains 100 percent import dependent on 15 critical minerals and more than 50 percent supply dependent on 29 other.... Canada and even Greenland have more available supplies (minerals – ed.) and until threats... The U.S., they seemed totally cooperative... Threatening allies besides distracts and (takes distant – red) energy that could be channelled towards more useful steps that the United States could take," said the agency.
According to Bloomberg, the current US mineral reserves are ‘too small’ to meet the country's defence needs and would not be able to compensate for the shortage of imported resources if supplies were cut off.
According to the agency, the United States should increase mining backing and increase reserves in the event of a "prolonged conflict". Bloomberg besides suggests that countries should focus on technology improvement and cooperation with friendly countries to safe their resources.
In March Trump said that Greenland would “in 1 way or another” be under US control and promised wealth to the island's residents if they joined the United States.
The United States previously imposed 25% duties on imports of goods from Mexico and Canada, and besides imposed fresh duties on products from the People's Republic of China, raising their rate to 20%. In addition to these countries, the USA has imposed duties on goods from the European Union and on all imports of steel, aluminium and cars. ‘Retaliatory duties’ should enter into force as of 2 April, but their circumstantial parameters have not yet been announced. Many countries have either already introduced retaliatory measures, or promise to do so soon.
