Four years ago, the 5 - individual household in question settled in a distant area in the forest in Abruzzo, Italy. Nathan Trevallion, 51-year-old British working as a cook, and his partner Catherine Birmingham, a 45-year-old Australian coaching woman, decided to rise their children in close contact with nature, distant from urban hustle and civilization.
There were police cars outside their home last week. By decision of the juvenile court in L’Aquila, the children were taken from their parents. 3 siblings – an eight-year-old kid and six-year-old twins – were transported to a social reflection centre. They are now in a closed facility in Vasto, where their parent can meet them only during appointed hours.
This became possible after the intervention of Giovanni Angelucci's household lawyer, who after long negotiations with social workers and services led to this consent. Angelucci besides stated that an appeal would be lodged against this decision next week.
The family's life was besides heard in September 2024 erstwhile all its members went to infirmary with signs of poisoning after eating forest mushrooms. After this event, social workers and service officers visited their place of residence, but they did not comply with the recommendations to supply regular medical care and school work for children.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her deputy Matteo Salvini expressed criticism of the court's decision. The head of government described the removal of the children as “alarming” and, as her spokesperson informed her, contacted Justice Minister Carlo Nordio. In turn, the Rai News portal reported that Meloni was considering sending inspectors from the Ministry of Justice to verify the correctness of the proceedings.
Matteo Salvini, who announced a visit to the household home next week, commented on the case on Friday, identifying the situation as scandalous. In his view, the State should not interfere with private education or the individual choices of parents who considered Italy to be a hospitable country, and yet were unjustly deprived of childcare, he said. The League leader assessed the full situation as illegally taking distant 3 children from his household and compared it to kidnapping.
Giuseppe Masciulli, mayor of close Palmola, besides criticized the decision to take the children distant from the family. He stressed that as a father he was profoundly moved by the situation and expressed his conviction that it could be resolved if the household committed to gathering certain conditions. Among them, he mentioned the restoration of moving water at home and regular weekly meetings with the local school to monitor the advancement of children in learning.
