Poland and Turkey signed a memorandum on safety cooperation. It assumes, among others, joint military exercises, cooperation of arms industries and actions to make the operational capabilities of armed forces. It was a very good visit. We agreed on a full series of actions – assessed Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamish is on a two-day visit to Turkey. Yesterday he visited Polish soldiers, who are stationed in that country as part of the NATO Mission "Tailored Assurance Measures for Turkey". Today, the most crucial point of the agenda was the talks with Yaşar Güler, Minister of Defence of Turkey.
During the meeting, politicians signed a memorandum on safety cooperation. – It contains respective twelve points that we will carry out. From the exchange of information, through joint military exercises, the improvement of armed industries, the interaction of counterintelligence and intelligence, to the improvement of the operational capabilities of our armed forces – mentioned Deputy Prime Minister Kosiniak-Kamish. – This was the longest conversation – or better: the most open and circumstantial – I had in private with my counterpart. It shows how many topics are coherent," he added.
The head of the Polish MON stressed that strengthening bilateral cooperation is very important, as Turkey has the second largest NATO army present and Poland has the 3rd largest NATO army. "If we combined our operational capabilities, they would be larger than the armies of most European NATO members, possibly outside the United States," he said.
Chance for Polish industry
Together with the delegation of the Ministry of Defence, representatives of Polish manufacture besides came to Ankara. Among another things, cooperation in developing the capabilities of unmanned TB2 aircraft and their weapons was discussed. Kosiniak-Kamysz said that he besides believed that the gathering "will bring effect in the form of Turkey's acquisition of our military equipment". As he said, Poland produces very good weapons, so it should be offered to allies. These include passive location radars, Lightning, Badgers, drone or drone systems. “San, which will shortly be an integrated anti-drone defense, will become an export product,” he said. – Polish manufacture must emergence to the challenge and respond not only to the needs of the Polish army, but besides to our allies. It is impossible to build an arms company based solely on its own state and its own capabilities," he noted.
More talks soon
During the talks, it was besides agreed that another gathering would be held in Warsaw, not only representatives of Poland and Turkey, but besides Romania. "This is the architecture of the east and confederate NATO flanks we want to build," said the minister. The trilateral talks announced are to be 1 of the stages of preparations for the NATO summit, which will take place in Ankara in July 2026.
The Minister besides thanked his counterpart for his commitment to achieving fair peace on the Russia-Ukraine line. "We appreciate the actions of the United States in this regard, but Turkey has retained an information channel with the Russian Federation, while standing on the side of Ukraine," he stressed. He added that Turkey's unlocking trade routes in the Black Sea was very crucial for the transfer of Ukrainian grain, so that these transports are not carried out by Poland, which is highly crucial from the position of Polish farmers and consumers.
Kosiniak-Kamish assured that he intended to support an ally in accessing European defence programmes. “I think that SAFE 2, which is already under discussion, should be available to our partners. European manufacture will not be able to carry out the procurement in the shortest time we gotta increase our capacity. We request to open up to our partners," he said. He added that the next European Union budget should include not only loans but besides grants. He besides assured his support for returning to talks about Turkey's accession to the European Union. “It is in Poland’s interest,” he said.
