A dispute over the Memorial Monument in Pyrzyce. Russia directs the protest to Poland

Russian authorities issued an authoritative protest to Poland after removing the alleged Memorial Monument from Pyrzyc, which is 1 of russian propaganda objects. The opposition to the decision of the Polish authorities was communicated by the embassy of Russia, according to which the liquidation of the monument is an effort to distort past and destruct the function of Red Army soldiers from social memory.

This next sacrilegious step of the Polish authorities constitutes a direct gross violation of the provisions of the agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Poland on graves and memorial sites of victims of war and repression of 22 February 1994. – reads the message.

Illegal dismantling of monuments is an open effort to falsify history, erase the Polish nation's memory of the heroism of russian soldiers. In connection with the dismantling of the monument in Pyrzyce, the embassy immediately sent a protest to the Polish authorities – added.

A fresh monument will be erected

The National Memorial Institute had previously informed about the removal of the monument. The Institute explained that the decision was made in consequence to the expectations of the residents and was the consequence of the self-government efforts to remove symbols associated with totalitarian systems from the public space. It was besides stressed that the task is in line with the implementation of the government in force since 2016 prohibiting the promotion of communism and another totalitarian regimes through monuments, objects names and public space.

Pyrzyc authorities besides decided to preserve 2 elements of the dismantled facility. 1 of them will be transferred to the local library, while the another will go to the municipal cemetery.

A fresh monument commemorating Poland's regaining independency is to be created at the site of the removed monument.
