Spirit Airlines (NK) is the seventh largest carrier in the United States and the largest ultra low-cost operator in North America, headquartered in Dania Beach, Florida. The airline most recently made headlines for filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November last year, although after a financial restructuring, NK has commenced operations as of March 2025.

Over 5,000 flight attendants are employed by Spirit Airlines, a majority of whom are severely affected by the airline’s precarious financial position. As part of their restructuring, a new compensation plan was introduced to Spirit’s cabin crew, which came into effect in January this year. Here is a comprehensive look at how much they make in lieu of their contribution to helping the airline serve 91 domestic and international destinations with a fleet of over 190 planes.

Spirit Airlines Flight Attendant Salary

Spirit Airlines flight attendants help the airline operate its ultra-low-cost model to the best possible effect.

Spirit Airline’s flight attendants are paid an hourly rate starting from US$22.51, and with due experience, an individual in their 13th year with the airline can expect to make as much as $60.44 each hour.

NK’s flight attendants are expected to put in 85 hours of work in a calendar month and any additional hours are compensated with an hourly rate of 1.5 times their original threshold. There is also a per diem paid out on layovers whereas the airline also covers for all accommodation and transport costs away from the home base. Training completion also entails a bonus.

So if we go by 75 hours of works, entry-level attendant can make around $1,913 each month and around $23,000 yearly. While, the most experienced attendants makes around $4,533 monthly and over $55,000 each year.

• PARTNER DISCOUNTS – Spirit Airlines has a number of corporate partnerships and flight attendants can avail deals through the same. Some of Spirit’s relations are with hotels, car rentals, meal planning companies, FedEx and cellphone providers.
• PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT – Spirit encourages its employees to undertake personal development programs related to their interests and goals. An annual reimbursement of up to US$4,500 is made to each eligible employee in lieu of personal development.
• UNION MEMBERSHIP – Spirit Airlines flight attendants join a strong union with fellow employees to safeguard their interests. As part of their membership with the union, they can avail a free degree as well in line with the company’s broader corporate resolution.
• INSURANCE – All Spirit Airlines flight attendants are provided with an all-inclusive medical insurance policy. This includes all expenses, including dental and vision-related treatments, thus ensuring that cabin crew are well-covered at their home bases or on layovers.

How to become a flight attendant at Spirit Airlines?

Spirit Airlines has the following requirements for its flight attendants.

• 2 years of experience in Guest Service, Hospitality, and or Sales experience.
• High School Diploma or GED; a College degree and a Driver’s license are preferred. (Preferred, but not required.)
• 21 years of age, 5 feet (without shoes), no visible tattoos, and no more than two earrings per lobe.
• A valid passport for at least the next six months, with the ability to travel to countries served by Spirit.
• Ability to assist Guests with carry-on luggage, lift and open emergency exit doors, push beverage carts, and stand for long periods.
• Ability to work flexible hours, days, and holidays in close quarters with service animals and all snack items, including but not limited to peanuts.
• Attend and (successfully) complete a 4-week Flight Attendant training program.

Spirit’s hiring process for flight attendants

Spirit Airlines has the following steps in its hiring process for flight attendants.

1. APPLICATION – All interested candidates are required to submit their resumes and other supporting documents online on the airline’s careers portal.
2. VIDEO INTERACTION – Shortlisted candidates are required to answer preset questions on video. This assess their personality traits and past experience in line with the job requirements.
3. INTERVIEW – A face-to-face interview follows for the candidates who have cleared the video interaction stage. This is to better understand the individual, their career path and psychometric abilities for the role too.
4. OFFER – A conditional offer is made to those who clear the interview. It is subject to the completion of background checks as well as a four-week training program at Spirit’s facility in Florida.
