On Friday, April 18, close Buk in the powiat policowy (west Pomeranian province), officials of the Municipal Guards in Dobra, alerted by residents, detained 5 men from Somalia. Foreigners were in the woods close the border with Germany and did not have IDs. After establishing that they were in Poland illegally, they were transferred to the Marine Border defender Branch.
The detained Somalis applied for global protection. Therefore, an appropriate administrative procedure was implemented: they were granted temporary certificates of identity of the foreigner and were sent to the Centre for Foreigners in Podkowa Leśna-Dębak, where they would await the decision of the Head of the Office for Foreigners.
This event falls within the wider migration context in the region. Poland, a transit country for many migrants heading for Western Europe, has in fresh years seen an increase in the number of attempts to illegally cross the border, especially towards Germany. In consequence to migratory pressures, a regulation was introduced in March temporarily limiting the right to apply for global protection, which aims to control the influx of migrants.
Today, Somalis are staying at a abroad centre where they are waiting for their applications for global protection. The decision will depend on the assessment of individual circumstances and situations in the country of origin.
