On Sunday, citizens of Slovenia Rejected euthanasia bill. As many as 53% voted against, which translates into 367,000 votes. Turnout was 40%. In order to prevent the bill from being introduced, more than 20% of the votes against were needed.
Slovenia rejected the euthanasia bill. The question asked to Slavencom was: "Do you support the implementation of the Act on Aided Suicide, which was passed by Parliament on 24 July 2025". For the bill to be suspended, over 20% of voters had to vote against. Parliament will be able to vote again on the fresh law after 12 months.
Last year, in the first plebiscite on this issue, with a turnout of little than 41.5%, 55% of voters advocated the legalisation of assisted suicide. In July this year, by 50:34 votes, with 3 abstentions, the Ljubljana Parliament passed fresh rules.
The bill proposed to grant patients who were full conscious, terminally ill, whose ‘suffering or wellness condition is unbearable’, ‘right to end their lives’, excluding cases of intellectual illness.
Let us remind you that euthanasia is legal in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands, Canada, Luxembourg, Portugal, Switzerland and respective states of the USA. In 2025, the lower chambers of Parliaments of France and large Britain advocated the introduction.
Without a doubt, any change in the Slovenian approach to euthanasia has been influenced by loud events in avant-garde - in terms of euthanasia- Canada, where "assisted suicide" is regularly proposed to all disabled people, due to the wellness crisis.
