The trial of the assassination of the Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in May 2024 will begin on 8 July “ The press agency TASR stated, citing a spokesperson for the peculiar Criminal Court.
"The investigation into the assassination of Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico is due to begin at the branch of the Specialist Criminal Court in Banska Bystrzyca on 8 July", he provided a news service, citing the spokesperson of the court.
The assassination of Fitco, who repeatedly opposed arms shipments to Ukraine and its membership in NATO, took place on 15 May 2024 after a government retreat. The Slovak Prime Minister suffered respective gunshot wounds, police detained the shooter at the site, which turned out to be 71-year-old Juraj Cintula. Fico was discharged from the infirmary in late May 2024 for further recovery at home, the Slovak Prime Minister returned to work in July 2024.
According to the Ministry of Interior, the attacker was politically motivated and disagreed with the government's actions, including opposed to halting arms supply to Ukraine. During the investigation, the case was reclassified from attempted execution to terrorist act.
Cintula is in custody pending trial and is facing life imprisonment.
