The past of Belvedere dates back to the 16th century, erstwhile a residence was erected on the Warsaw escapade, most likely for Queen Bona, wife of Zygmunt Stara. In the 17th century, the palace passed into the hands of Lithuanian Chancellor Krzysztof Zygmunt Pac, whose wife was to call him "Belvedere", which comes from the Italian "bel vedere", It means "beautiful view".

In the 19th century, the building became the seat of the large Duke of Constanty, the brother of Tsar Alexander I. It was from here that Konstanty escaped on the night of the November Uprising in 1830.

After regaining independency in 1918, Belveder became the seat of the head of state, Marshal Józef Piłsudski. From 1922 to 1926 he served as the residence of presidents Gabriel Narutowicz and Stanisław Wojciechowski. After the May overturn in 1926, Piłsudski returned to Belvedere, where he lived until his death in 1935.

During planet War II, the palace was rebuilt by the Germans into the seat of politician General Hans Frank. Despite the demolition plans, Belveder survived the war without major damage.

After the war, from 1945 to 1952, he was the seat of president Bolesław Bierut and then president of the State Council. In 1989, he again became the seat of the president - first Wojciech Jaruzelski, and since 1990 Lech Wałęsa.

Belvedere today. Functions and Symbolics

Today, Belveder is mostly full representation function. State ceremonies, diplomatic meetings and the reception of abroad delegations are organised here. Although it is not the permanent seat of the President, its symbolic meaning remains unchanged.
