Singaporen Minister for the Interior K. Shanmugam on Friday warned against the activities of the Chinese hacker group UNC3886. "UNC3886 poses a serious threat to us and may undermine our national security" - said the Minister.
Shanmugam added that the group «attacks strategical advanced value objectives and critical infrastructure providing basic services». The Minister did not give details of the attacks or their possible consequences, citing safety considerations.
Mandiant confirms Chinese ties
Google-owned Mandiant, a cyber safety specialist, described UNC3886 as a “spy group linked to China”. According to Mandiant, this group attacked defence, technological and telecommunications institutions and organizations in both the United States and Asia.
Accusations of cyber- and conventional espionage against Beijing have intensified in fresh years. In May, the British Ministry of Defence fell victim to a cyber attack attributed to China, and in July, the Australian intelligence agency warned against Chinese hackers.
Attacks on semiconductor industry
At the end of the week, Reuters' agency besides revealed that Beijing-related hackers were intensifying attacks on Taiwanese semiconductor manufacture and investment analysts from Taiwan. Beijing consistently denies these allegations.
