New power in Syria

In Syria there is now a transitional administration, which was created after the overthrow of president Bashar al-Assad's multi-year government last December. The fundamentalist organization Hajat Tahrir asz-Sham (HTS) played a key function in this change of power.

The leader of this armed group Ahmed al-Shara presently serves as interim president of Syria. HTS was the main force in the offensive that led to the collapse of the long-standing government of Assad after years of civilian war.

First election after Asad

The Syrian Electoral Committee announced on Sunday that parliamentary elections would take place on 5 October, according to the SANA agency. This will be the first election since the overthrow of the Assad government and a key test for the fresh transitional administration.
