Hassouna was not only a photographer, but besides an eyewitness to a worsening day-to-day reality. She documented Israeli crimes in the Gaza Strip.
In 1 of Hassoun’s earlier entries, she prophetically wrote: “As for inevitable death, if I die, I want loud death. I don't want to see myself in breaking news, or in a group, I want the death the planet will hear about. A way that lasts forever and immortal images that neither time nor space can bury."
The day before Fatima's death, the Association of Independent Distribution Films (ACID) announced that the documentary "Put Your Soul on Your Palm and Walk" (Put your soul on your hand and go), in which she was the main character, was qualified to participate in the upcoming Cannes movie festival.
The manager of the film, exiled from Iran Sepideh Farsi, in an interview with Le Monde described Fatima as being “the sun”. She besides mentioned how a young photographer sent her pictures, messages and audio recordings from Gaza all day. “Every morning I woke up and wondered if she was inactive alive,” she said.
The dramatic situation of journalists in Gaza
According to the global Federation of Journalists (IFJ), at least 157 journalists and media workers have died since the beginning of the Israeli war in the Gaza Strip. another reports propose that the actual number of victims among media representatives may exceed 200.
The Federation powerfully condemned the continued attacks on journalists, stressing the request to end Israel's impunity. "This massacre must stop," we read in a message from the organization that called for an immediate and independent investigation into the murders of journalists.
"Journalists in conflict zones should be treated as civilians and be able to do their work without interference. There is simply a global interest in what is happening in the Gaza Strip, but we can only see the fact erstwhile journalists have access to it," recalled IFJ Secretary General Anthony Belanger.
