You're sorting the waste? The EU wants to change the rules. There may be 11 baskets under the houses

The European Union is preparing changes that can permanently change the way waste is disposed of throughout the Community. Among another things, it is about harmonising segregation rules, introducing fresh labels on packaging, and a revolution in the colours of containers that will go straight to households in the coming years.
You're segregating paper, glass and bio, and yet you inactive have doubts about which basket to put, for example, yogurt wrappers in? Brussels wants to end specified dilemmas. There is work on harmonising the segregation strategy throughout the European Union, which can mean even eleven colours of containers under our homes. Supporters talk about a qualitative leap in recycling, while critics inform against mess. The case is now entering a decisive phase.

Segregation of garbage - colors of containers. Why does the EU want to change the system?
According to a study prepared by the Joint investigation Centre commissioned by the European Commission, the deficiency of consistent segregation rules in EU countries effectively inhibits recycling. The colours of containers vary not only between countries, but sometimes even between neighbouring municipalities.

Data are meaningful: in 2022, only 186.5 kg of packaging waste was per inhabitant of the Union, of which 36 kg were plastics. Various labelling systems make it hard to recover natural materials, increase transport costs and require additional investment in the education of residents.

The answer is to amend the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). The task assumes a uniform colour strategy for containers and common pictograms on packaging so that the Polish, Spanish or German citizen knows which basket to put the product into.

New waste containers and 11 colors of segregation. What goes into each basket?
The most breathtaking is the proposal to extend the strategy to 11 waste fractions. According to the authors of the report, more categories will accomplish cleaner natural materials and higher recycling efficiency. The colours proposed in the JRC study correspond to circumstantial waste categories:

blue - paper and cardboard,
green - glass (colorless and colorful),
yellow - plastic (hard and soft),
orange - cartons for beverages and multimaterial packaging with a paper advantage,
grey - metals,
brown - biowaste and compostable materials,
pink - textiles,
blue - ceramics,
bright brown - wood and cork,
red - hazardous waste,
purple - waste mixed.

The project's creators argue that uniform colours will reduce the time of learning the rules and facilitate the work of sorting rooms. In Poland, any municipalities already test additional containers, e.g. for textiles or colourless glass. The EU proposal could so order the current "patchwork" of local solutions.

New garbage segregation. erstwhile and how can change enter into force?
It's just a proposal for now, not a law. The improvement is to be implemented gradually from 2026 up to 2040. First, manufacturers will be required to clearly indicate the packaging for the material from which it is made. Only later - in subsequent stages - will the uniform colours of the containers appear.
The final number of fractions and colours depends on negotiations with associate States and on uncovering a compromise between the simplicity of the strategy and the effectiveness of recycling. Local governments are already signaling concerns: the exchange of containers, logistics and information campaigns will be costly, and the more colors, the greater the hazard of confusion.
