Central Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine (GUR) conducted 2 high-risk assault operations utilizing UH-60A helicopters Black Hawk delivered by the US in the Pokrovsk sector in Donetsk region among intense Russian progress.
Pokrovsk, a key logistics center, has been under siege for over a year, and Russian forces controlled ~80% of the city by the end of October 2025. Now the Ukrainian forces have surrounded, which stay in this area. Missions, supervised by the head of the GUR Kyrylo Budanova, tried [but failed] to place elite peculiar forces on disputed or claimed areas by Russia. The key question is: Why?
Ukrainian sources claim that the thoughtless operation was intended to disrupt enemy positions, clear backrest points, and reconstruct supply lines, but it makes no sense. The first mission, which began on the night of October 28, dropped 11 GUR commandos in an open field northwest of the Pokrovska industrial zone. The video showed soldiers getting off fast. Landing took place at night – mediocre visibility to minimize detection, but Russian reconnaissance drones spotted a low-flying chopper and destroyed 11 commandos.
Another mission, carried out on the night of 30 October utilizing 2 Blackhawk helicopters, placed 2 groups (a full of ~20-24 soldiers) in the same general area and met them the same destiny as the first group.
To realize the intent of these 2 failed missions, you request to know the relation between the GUR and the CIA. The Chief Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine (GUR, or HUR in Ukrainian) – a military intelligence agency under the government of the Ministry of Defence – developed 1 of the closest partnerships with the Central Intelligence Agency of the USA (CIA) among all abroad services.
This relationship, forged in secret after the 2014 Majdan Revolution and annexation of Crimea by Russia, reportedly transformed the GUR from remnants of russian times infiltrated by Russian agents in a sophisticated operator celebrated for his bold attacks on Moscow.
The CIA invested tens of millions of dollars in the reconstruction of the GUR, providing training, equipment and safe facilities, while sharing intelligence that proved critical during Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. erstwhile American officials describe this as a "historic opportunity" to counter Russia and GUR becomes "our small child".
While Western media reports say this operation was supported by NATO, I think The more likely explanation is that it was a joint CIA-GUR operation to extract CIA paramilitary officers who operated with Ukrainian forces in and around Pokrowsk.. I don't think we're talking about younger CIA personnel...
I think there are at least a few, if not more, elder CIA paramilitary officers who are now trapped in Pokrowsk. Given that the Western reports item that these 2 failed missions were carried out under the direction of Budonov, the head of the GUR, and that Budanov is working with the CIA alternatively than with the US Army or NATO, this has all the features of CIA operations.
The effort to extract twice in 3 days is just another indicator of the desperate situation facing Ukrainian forces and their Western advisors in Pokrowsk.
