The fresh government draft law on the position of the closest individual in the relation and the agreement on common life provides, among others, for the anticipation of joint accounting in the case of property union, access to wellness information or will inheritance. fresh Left representatives point out that the regulation of informal unions is intended to guarantee the safety of those remaining in them, but this compromise remains far from the party's expectations.
– The fresh Left is in favour of matrimony equality. We do not change our views, it is crucial to us and we will do everything possible to make this happen someday in the future. The statistic are inexorable. In the Polish Parliament there are 21 of us from fresh Left, the remainder of the Members are people with conservative views and we have no influence on Members from another groups who have different opinions – says Newseria agency Joanna Scheering-Wielgus, associate of the European Parliament from fresh Left.
The draft Act on the position of the closest individual in the union and the agreement on common life assumes, among another things, the anticipation of concluding a civilian contract with the notary, which is to be registered with the civilian Office, the right to a decision on burial, access to wellness information and medical documentation, the anticipation of joint settlement in the case of property union, the anticipation of entering into wellness insurance with the partner, or the right to a household pension after the deceased partner and will inherit.
– We must negotiate, effort and fight. Hence our agreement with the PSL, which has always had the biggest objections to the law on partnerships, and hence the agreement that has been developed, which gives safety to people surviving in informal relationships – emphasizes Joanna Scheering-Wielgus.
In the light of the CBOS survey of 2024, 90% of Poles were in favour of the anticipation of formalising partnerships created by women and men. 52% of those surveyed supported the legalisation of same-sex partnerships, and 43% felt that they should not have specified opportunities.
– It's not just homosexual, it's mostly heterosexual. These are financial, tax, wellness issues. These are truly very good solutions that will give them a chance, at least for starters, to feel that you care about them. Now it's unregulated. I think it is simply a scandal that it is inactive not in Poland. If you look at the map of Europe as a whole, in fact, in all country, partnerships work, I am not talking about matrimony equality anymore – emphasises the Euro MP.
In the European Union, 5 countries do not recognise registered partnerships. Apart from Poland, these are: Lithuania (in 2025, the Constitutional Court ruled that the exclusion of same-sex couples from the partnership right was unconstitutional), Bulgaria, Romania and Slovakia. president Karol Nawrocki has repeatedly announced that he is ready to discuss the position of a loved 1 and solutions that will not undermine the constitutionally protected institution of marriage.
– I think all conversation is important, even with those people who now say no, I won't sign, no, I disagree. You gotta talk due to the fact that you should always see the light in the tunnel and effort to make what you dream about just succeed. – Joanna Scheering-Wielgus speaking.
According to the study of the Central Statistical Office on the demographic situation of Poland by 2024, last year about 135 1000 fresh marriages were concluded, almost 10 1000 little than the year before. More than 57 1000 married couples divorced, i.e. about 0.6 1000 more than in 2023, and in the case of another 0.5 1000 married couples separated.
Data from the last National Census indicate that between 2011 and 2021 the number of couples remaining in non-formalized relationships increased by about 3 times – in 2021 more than 895 1000 were recorded. In the structure of families they accounted for about 8 percent. More than 63% of unformed relationships (565,5 thousand) are couples with children.
– As we look at these statistics, we have less and less marriages, more divorces. I'm married, and I truly appreciate it, but it was my decision. On the another hand, I would like those who do not want to be married to have another choice. Partnerships are specified a anticipation – considers the associate of the European Parliament of the fresh Left. – Robert Biedron and Krzysztof Śmiszek are in a relation precisely as long as I have with my husband, and I have all rights with my husband, and Robert and Krzysiek do not. I think it's totally unfair and I don't realize people who have a problem with it, who say, for example, that this is simply a threat to marriage. What kind of threat to marriage? If individual wants to marry, they can.
