According to alarming data, only in the first half of this year 2,707 pig flocks were eliminated in Poland. Furthermore, the disclosure of data indicate to concentrate production. Large farms are gaining importance, while smaller ones, thanks to stricter requirements, fall.
The Tusk government is intensifying the fight against pig farmers. According to the information disclosed by the Agency for Restructuring and Modernization of Agriculture (ARiMR), in the first half of 2025 2,707 pig farms were eliminated in Poland, but the number of animals kept in Poland decreased only somewhat – by 0.25%, which means a decrease of 22,731 units.
On 1 July 2025, there were 45 164 flocks in Poland, with a full of 9 186 543 pigs. Although the number of herds decreased by about 5.7%, the population remained almost unchanged. This indicates a process of concentrating production in which larger, stronger farms take over the dominant role.
ARiMR data show that in any voivodships the number of herds decreased, while the pig population increased. An example is the Mazowieckie Voivodeship, where 39,619 pigs arrived despite the liquidation of 154 herds. A akin situation occurred in Warmian-Masurian voivodships (+21 732 pigs with a drop of 40 herds) and Podlasie (+4 252 pigs, minus 48 herds). The largest simplification in the population was recorded in Łódź Voivodeship, where as many as 70,660 pigs fell after the liquidation of 253 herds. In Wielkopolska, 628 herds were removed, resulting in a decrease in the number of animals by 27,736.
Only tiny pork producers fall in bulk, while any large companies have increased the population. Interestingly, the structure of farms is undergoing an different transformation – 1 210 flocks of 11 to 30 pigs and 481 in the 101-1000 units scope have been removed. At the same time, 616 of the smallest flocks (1–5 pigs) arrived, which may propose a return to home farming, for their own needs, which requires little legal and wellness and safety requirements than breeding for sale.
