Ryanair, 1 of the most popular low-cost airlines in Europe, again changes the rules on baggage transport. This time travellers must prepare for more stringent checks, fresh measurement methods and severe penalties for exceeding limits. No more handling – the carrier wants to halt attempts to “smuggle” additional hand baggage erstwhile and for all. Does this mean that travel will become even more expensive?
End of combination with hand luggage
Travelers have been showing extraordinary ingenuity in packaging for years. Rolling clothes, pushing shoes with socks, wearing respective layers of clothing or hiding things in travel bags – these are just a fewer tricks that allowed you to circumvent strict rules on luggage. However, Ryanair has decided to put an end to these practices and introduces new, much stricter rules.
The amendments concern more precise control of the dimensions and weight of the hand baggage. The existing boxes for measuring bags will be replaced by fresh meters that no walls, and only marked lines indicating the permissible dimensions. This means that travellers will no longer be able to ‘force’ their backpacks and suitcases to fit into a conventional measuring grid.
New rules enter into force – penalties will be paid
The basic rules for the carriage of baggage at Ryanair do not change drastically, but their enforcement will be much stricter.
- Hand luggage dimensions stay at 40 × 20 × 25 cm (small bag) and 55 × 40 × 20 cm (for passengers with precedence purchased).
- Maximum weight of hand baggage is 10 kg – in the past the control of this value was occasional, now it will be a standard procedure.
- Any exceeding limit means a payment of 50 euro (approx. 220 PLN) for any excess or non-conforming baggage.
- Passengers without precedence entry They won't be able to carry bigger suitcases on board.
Changes are already tested at any airports, among others. in Berlin, Gdansk, Katowice and Poznań, and Ryanair announces their extension to all its routes in Europe.
Will travel become more expensive?
Ryanair argues for changes in concern for the comfort and safety of passengers. But for many travelers new rules mean additional expenditure. Those who have utilized gaps in the rules so far, now will be forced either to pay for bigger baggage or to pack even more minimally.
For commuters or longer trips travel costs can increase by even respective 100 zlotys. So it is worth carefully planning your luggage and consider buying a precedence entry option if we take more items.
Summary – no simplification tariff
The fresh Ryanair rules mean 1 thing — No more circumvention. Airlines will be much more stringent in enforcing their rules, and additional checks mean greater hazard of passenger subsidies. So if you're planning to travel with this carrier, check the baggage limits carefully before you leave for the airport – otherwise you will have an unpleasant (and expensive) surprise.
