In the USSR, and later in Russia, naval armaments were never a priority, but especially at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, they increased significantly. The USSR, as a atomic power, with a vast land space and surrounded by detached bodies of water, took care of the construction of warships. But precedence was given to missiles, planes and tanks. With the collapse of the USSR and the emergence of Russia, ambitious plans to catch up with the U.S. at sea were, of course, shattered. The 1990s, in particular, saw the massive dismantling of the Russian Navy Fleet.
