A Conversation by the Vitold of Pilecki with the Wife of Mary
date:26 May 2020 Editor: Anna

On the anniversary of the execution of Captain Witold Pilecki, 1 of the top heroes of Polish Independence,
We callback the shocking conversation between the Rotmaster and Maria's wife. It took place in a prison on Rakowiecka a fewer days before the execution of the sentence. It was reconstructed from Mary's memoirs and papers after the Rotmaster.
This dialog was repeatedly performed by Urszula Paczyńska and Tomasz Bieszczad from the "Fortress of Memory" Group, including during the spectacle for Łódź youth "On the bottom of ash starry dijament..." in October 2019 (grant of MKiDN) and in the Janusz Kurtyka Library, in the building of the erstwhile detention in Rakowiecka (February 2019).
Hello and glory to the Heroes!

A Conversation by the Vitold of Pilecki with his Wife, Mary
- Mary... Don't cry... don't cry. besides late to regret... Think of the future in peace and strength.
- I'm sorry. I can't let it go. General Anders himself ordered you to leave Pol-ska... why did you refuse?
- I'm sorry. The general was wrong: Everyone cannot leave Poland, individual must proceed and fight. National Army commanders should stay so that young soldiers can “get out of the underground” and live normally.
- I'm sorry. You don't believe that. After everything they've done to you...
- Maria, I believe you. I swore, “For the origin of my Fatherland in need, of own blood, nor of life to spare.” Just donating yourself gives our lives meaning.
- I'm sorry. You took on all the accusations they made against your people...
- I'm sorry. I'd alternatively have a wound of betrayal in my heart. Besides... I can't live anymore. Auschwitz at this ubek execution hall was a play. I was finished here! And if anyone should be moving from Poland, then you and the kids...
- Never. I couldn't leave you like that. I don't want to look for happiness behind the far ocean at your expense...
- I'm sorry. Happiness itself will come to you for a meeting, Mary. due to the fact that love can live anywhere. I... have already experienced what St. John of the Cross wrote in Auschwitz: “In order to scope the fullness of everything, 1 must deny himself completely and in everything. [...] It is only in specified a clearing that the spirit will find peace and rest...”
- I'm sorry. It's besides hard for me, Witek, I can't...
- Yes, you can. I believe that if God wants to help, we can do anything for sure. I've... I've seen men who think they're believers, and they're ashamed to usually say goodbye, and they're making any kind of... a substitute for the sign of the cross. due to the fact that what? due to the fact that they fear that any fool, any “colleague”, would not laughter at them...? You can't do that.
- I'm sorry. People are weak, Witku. These days...
- I'm sorry. Times are always good to be human, Mary. I don't want to put myself above another people. I just want to shake them up.
- End of sight!
- I'm sorry. erstwhile can I come to you again?
- I'm sorry. I don't know, Mary... Take my comb for a souvenir... That's all I have here. And take this book...
- Thomas Kempis... “On the Imitating of Christ”...
- Yeah. all day, read a part to the kids... That will give you strength...
- Well... (opens the book) “Blessed is the soul that is open to the whispers of the inspiration of God, and closed to the sound of this world...”
- I'm sorry. See... it's better now...
- I'm sorry. What am I expected to tell the kids?
- I'm sorry. Say unto them, Love the native land. Love your holy religion and traditions of your own Nation. Don't be ashamed to love them. Grow into men of honor, brave, honest, always faithful to the highest values. Give them your full life. Go to holiness...
