Just after the U.S. Command announced that the Bella 1 tanker, presently flying as a Mariner under the Russian flag, was occupied in the North Atlantic, an alarm was raised in Moscow. The Russian Ministry of Transport issued an urgent, authoritative communication in which it accused the United States of violating maritime law. The message stresses that Russian citizens are on board, and so Washington bears full work for the way the operation is conducted and the remainder of the crew.
Russia makes circumstantial demands. It calls for all Russian sailors to be given humanitarian and decent treatment, to respect their rights and interests, and not to be hindered by a fast return to their homeland. The politicians of the power camp go even further. Andrei Kliszas, MP of president 1 Russia, called the American intervention "outright piracy", trying to enter the full case into a wider communicative of alleged U.S. abuse of force on the seas of the world.
Marinera – from the fleet of shadows under the Russian flag
The tanker facing the dispute has a long and stormy history. Under the earlier name Bella 1 for years, it belonged to the alleged shadow fleet – an informal network of oil carriers from countries subject to Western sanctions, primarily from Venezuela, Russia and Iran.
Such vessels shall regularly change owners, flags and names to make it hard to track their activities and the actual origin of the cargo. Bella 1 was placed on the U.S. Sanction List as early as mid-2024. According to the U.S. authorities, the unit not only carried restricted oil, but besides sailed under a false flag and was covered by a court order for seizure.
At a time erstwhile from the behind-the-scenes phase of pressures moved to open military action against Venezuela and president Nicolas Maduro was detained, the movements of this peculiar tanker were under the scrutiny of Western services and analysts. That's erstwhile Bella 1 disappeared from the radar under that name to shortly return as a Mariner under the Russian flag.
Pursuit from the Venezuelan coast to the North Atlantic
What ends present with a diplomatic brawl began as a classical game of cat and mouse at sea. After the Americans attempted to take over the unit off the coast of Venezuela, the tanker took a course north, trying to distance himself from the region under peculiarly strict supervision.
For the following weeks, Mariner moved across the Atlantic, and her location was kept under constant surveillance with vessel traffic monitoring systems and means of detection. To observe the area, among others, the U.S. Coast defender vessel and patrol aircraft were involved, which were to keep visual contact with the unit and study all maneuver.
The tension grew with subsequent messages. The case has already ceased to be just a method dispute over a circumstantial infringement of sanctions, and has become another component of a wider clash of interests between the US and Russia. This time on the oil trail.
Russian escort en route, Americans accelerating
The reaction of Moscow did not take long. The Russian authorities sent North Fleet Marinera units to take over the tanker under their escort and bring it to the port of Murmansk. Russian media besides wrote about sending fighters to the Western patrol aircraft area to make it hard for them to search for ships covering the ship.
It was the possible of an upcoming Russian escort that proved to be a critical point. The culmination took place on 7 January in the North Atlantic. Before the Russian ships could join Marinera, American troops together with the US Coast defender decided to board.

Russia presents the same series of events rather differently. In its view, we are dealing with a legally floating unit under the Russian flag, moving in global waters "in full compliance with maritime law", which has become the mark of "unproportionally aggressive" US and NATO activities.
