A year ago, Marcin Romanowski most likely had a different imagination of his life. Everything changed on December 9, erstwhile the court decided to arrest him. Romanowski had previously been in hospital, had a nose surgery, then abruptly discharged at his own request and disappeared.
When the BOLO and the European Arrest Warrant were issued, he was found in Budapest on 19 December, and Viktor Orban personally announced that Hungary had granted him political asylum.
For almost a year, Romanowski kept going on about himself. It welcomes guests in Budapest, talks with media, thunders about "lawless Tusk" in social media and reacts to its entries. But lately, it's like he's been peculiarly active.
Romanowski makes a notification to Minister Żurek
He's the 1 who just filed a study about Waldemar Żurek's suspicion of committing a crime, which he himself announced on X.
"This is 1 of the most serious provisions in Polish law – it concerns the activity for abroad intelligence by disinformation that strikes the Polish strategy and the authorities of the state. Minimum penalty: 8 years, maximum: 30 years in prison. Why did I file a notice? due to the fact that the scale of connections and convergence of actions is besides serious to ignore it" – he hits the Minister of Justice.
And it's all over again.
Romanowski besides praised Hungarian asylum for Zbigniew Ziobry.
By the way, even he in his imagination of life most likely did not foresee that 1 day their paths would cross in this country – he with 11 charges, Ziobro with 26. Both suspects in the Justice Fund investigation.
– I would surely encourage you to take advantage of the anticipation of legal protection, of course, due to the fact that these allegations, which are made in relation to Minister Zbigniew Ziobro, are precisely the same in character as with me. Similarly, there is no chance of a fair trial," he told journalists in Budapest recently.
Again, his name is circulating in Polish media.
How does Romanowski live for asylum?
At first, the media even reported that he was caught buying at the supermarket.
"He lives on the Danube. From the windows it has a view of right-hand Budapest. close there is simply a church where politicians are frequent. He travels by public transport, shoppers in a local store" – he reported from Budapest "Fact", which was besides quoted by Hungarian media.
– It may be strange, but he and Ziobro do not attract much interest in Hungary today. The greater curiosity was at the beginning of Romanowski, but we have not heard of him since he became head of the Polish-Hungarian institute. Now Ziobra is not in the foreground of public interest. We don't know if Ziobro will search asylum. Today, everyone in Hungary is engulfed with the upcoming elections – 1 of the Hungarian journalists is telling us now.
Romanowski manager of Polish-Hungarian Institute
Marcin Romanowski became the head of this institute in April 2025. It is the Polish-Hungarian Institute of Freedom, which was created as part of the Hungarian Centre for Fundamental Rights (Alapjogokert Koezpont) – an organization associated with Fidesz Orban.
"Poland is now a experimental ground, where the above values, which form the foundations of Western civilization, are questioned and constantly attacked. The Hungarian-Polish Institute of Freedom aims to research and map these trends, as well as to make predictive mechanisms against these threats" - this was the message quoted by Polish media at the time.
Hungarian media reported that their government, in order to defend Romanowski, even changed the law for him.
"He inactive lives in Budapest. He leads a comparatively quiet, though possibly modester life than before, alongside his fresh job. In May, he even gave an interview to the Mandiner portal," Index.hu wrote about it in July.
In this interview, Romanowski spoke, among others, about the proceedings against him. And the Hungarian reader learned, among others, that the current Polish government is trying to prevent opposition activities.
There were more interviews. For example, in Brussels, Signal warned Hungarians about events in Poland.
Leader of the Hungarian Opposition on Romanowski: Should Find a fresh Country
In the summertime he was visited by Jerzy Lewczuk, mayor of Izbica in Lublin, but it was not a private visit.
– Dinner, not dinner, everything he funded – said Lewczuk in an interview with Wp.pl. Romanowski praised the photos.
In October, "Rzeczpospolita" asked him what he was doing. "I am working on various projects myself," he said.
And everything sounds beautiful, but in the spring of 2026 there will be parliamentary elections in Hungary. According to fresh polls, there is expanding support for the opposition respect and Freedom organization (TSHA). Her leader, Euro MP Péter Magyar, announced in his interview with "Gazeta Wyborcza":
– If I were to give him (Marcin Romanowski – at ed.) any advice, it was that the closer the elections in Hungary, the more he should increase his efforts to find a fresh country in which he would hide. We are bound by global treaties, which are very clear.
