A politician is accused of attempting to undermine constitutional order as well as ties to extremist groups. According to 1 official, the criminal case against Georgesc is “the defence of Romania's sovereignty”.
Georgescu, who frequently criticized NATO and praised Russian president Vladimir Putin, as well as Romanian fascists from planet War II, gained large popularity on TikTok. Shortly before the presidential election, tens of thousands of accounts in the application abruptly became active, and 1 of them invested $381 1000 (about PLN 1.5 million) in the promotion of the candidate. According to Romanian intelligence, Russia was behind this.
As a result, a criminal case was launched against a politician. He was accused of attempting to undermine constitutional order, spreading disinformation, and creating xenophobic and anti-Semitic groups. Georgescu himself claims that these allegations are politically motivated.
In early March, the Romanian authorities found Russian military attaché Viktor Makowski and his deputy Evgeny Ignatev as undesirable. They were ordered to leave the country. Euronews sources reported that their expulsion was due to their ties with Georgesc.
Earlier in December, the Romanian Constitutional Court annulled the results of the first circular of presidential elections that Georgescu won, obtaining 22.9 percent of the votes. The court initially recognized his victory, but then changed his decision under force evidence from intelligence services indicating interference in elections. A second presidential election in Romania is scheduled for May 2025.
