"This is not a protest 'for principle'. This is simply a fight for our work, land and the future of the Polish village. Without a farmer there is no food and without food there is no security" - emphasized the organizers of protests.

Negotiations in Brussels on the Mercosur agreement

A discussion on Trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Uruguay). The Agreement is to establish Customs preferences for certain agricultural products from those countries specified as beef, poultry, dairy, sugar and ethanol. In return, the markets of these countries will open up to European industry.

The agreement was scheduled to be signed in December 2025, and is presently being referred to January 2026. In mid-December, they crossed Brussels demonstrations of farmers from different European countries, including Poland, Italy and France. Farmers protested against the agreement, among others, for fear that the introduction of preferential tariffs on certain agricultural products from Mercosur would hit them.

Last Monday, EU ambassadors decided that decision on protection clauses for farmers in a trade agreement with Mercosur, originally scheduled for that date, will be postponed to January 2026. According to media reports, the EU plans to sign a trade agreement with the South American bloc on 12 January.

Earlier, just after the EU summit in Brussels, Prime Minister Donald Tusk told reporters that Poland will keep a negative attitude towards the agreement. He added that moving the agreement to January would give the European Commission time to make additional safeguards.
