What does the resolution contain?

The UN General Assembly adopted on Tuesday a resolution "Support for lasting peace in Ukraine", which called for an immediate, full and unconditional ceasefire between the Russian and Ukrainian sides. The paper stresses the request to end the four-year-old military activities which destabilise the region and origin serious humanitarian consequences.

The resolution reaffirms the support of the global community for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity and calls for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in accordance with the United Nations Charter. It besides highlighted the request to exchange prisoners of war and to let the return of forced displaced civilians, including children affected by conflict.

107 UN associate States voted in favour of the document, while 12 countries, including Russia, Belarus, Cuba and Iran, expressed their opposition. A full of 51 countries abstained, including the United States, India, Brazil, Armenia, Hungary, Kazakhstan and Serbia.

‘Language that distracts’

Prior to the vote, the United States requested a separate vote on 2 crucial parts of the project, which referred to the territorial integrity of Ukraine and issues of global law. However, this proposal was not supported by the General Assembly.

U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the UN Tammy Bruce welcomed the UN's call for ceasefire in Ukraine. However, she pointed out that the text of the resolution contained wording which she felt could draw attention from diplomatic action to end the war alternatively of strengthening it.

On the another hand, a erstwhile U.S. envoy for Ukraine, General Keith Kellogg, defined the decision to abstain as hard to understand.
