As of 1 September 2024, in Polish schools and kindergartens, the amendment of the regulation of the Minister of National Education concerning the discipline of religion and ethics will enter into force. The fresh government aims to make the organisation of these classes more flexible, which will importantly affect the way spiritual and ethical lessons will be taught in public education institutions. Here's what's worth knowing about the coming changes.

Key Changes to the fresh Regulation

Flexibility in the Organisation of Lessons

The amendment aims to facilitate the organisation of spiritual lessons and ethics, especially in cases where the number of students reported in individual branches or classes is low. Until now, if there were not adequate students (min. seven) in a peculiar class or ward, classes were not organized. The fresh rules will introduce the anticipation of creating inter-branch or inter-class groups to make better usage of available resources and supply lessons for more children.

Inter-branch and inter-class groups

From September 2024, school and kindergarten heads will be able to form inter-branch and inter-class groups, combining children from different classes or branches. For example, class I and III students will be able to participate together in spiritual lessons, provided that the number of students in both classes meets the requirements. The fresh rules besides let the creation of groups of students from different classes within a single primary school. The maximum number of pupils in the group is 25 for children in kindergartens and students in grades I to III and 28 for another students in all types of schools.

Taking account of peculiar Needs

In the case of pupils with peculiar education decisions, the maximum number of pupils in the group will be adjusted in accordance with the rules on the organisation of schools and kindergartens. This means that the number of children in the group may be reduced to supply adequate educational support for students with disabilities.

What will change September 1st?

On 1 September 2024 changes will enter into force, which can affect the way children learn religion and ethics in Polish schools and kindergartens. The fresh rules aim to increase the availability of these classes and to let for flexible adaptation of groups to the current number of students.

What does the fresh Regulation mean for Students and Parents?

Thanks to the fresh rules, parents and students will have more flexibility in organising spiritual and ethics classes. This will let for better adjustment of lessons to children's needs and capabilities and will enable them to take place even in smaller groups. This may affect the quality of teaching and availability of these classes in various educational institutions.
