European leaders gathered in Albania on Friday at the European Political Community Summit.
A full of 47 Heads of State or Government as well as EU institutions participate in the Tirana Summit.
Among them are British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
French president Emmanuel Macron is besides in Tirana. In addition to attending the summit, he will pay a visit to Albania on Saturday, May 17. This follows his visit to October 2023 – the first visit of the French president to Albania.
International groups or organisations participate in the summitNATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, president of the European Council Antonio Costa, president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, Head of EU abroad Policy Kaja Kallas and Secretary-General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset.
The "New Europe in a fresh World: Unity – Cooperation – Joint Action" Summit will focus on issues specified as European security, including support for Ukraine, European defence and the protection of democracy. The summit is the best place for leaders who meet bilaterally or in tiny groups to discuss key safety issues.
Kallas and von der Leyen announced that the EU would start working on a fresh package of sanctions against Russia.
The European Political Community summit was attended by the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenski.
The European leaders' convention in Tirana takes place erstwhile Albania's prime minister Edi Rama is in highest form after he has secured himself a 4th term.It is besides a crucial time for Albania, which is inactive trying to shake off the influence of the communist governments and join the European Union.
