Reform: The European Union launched a support programme for the victims of political repression in Belarus

The European Union, as part of the EU4Belarus-SALT initiative, has announced the launch of a fresh support programme for Belarusian citizens who have suffered from political repression, lost their income or the anticipation of continuing education. Swiatlana's advisor Franak Wiaczorka announced the start of accepting applications.

Under the terms of the programme, at the time of the application, the associate must live (not earlier than August 2020) in 1 of the EU countries, the European economical Area (EEA) or the east Partnership countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine). Exceptions include applicants who will be able to paper that they left Belarus before August 2020 due to repression and persecution associated with the 2020 presidential election.

The programme shall be aimed at:

  • former political prisoners;
  • Belarusians who have been subjected to administrative or criminal proceedings for political reasons.

The amount of support may be up to EUR 10 000.

Appropriations may be allocated to:

  • to pay professional training, training courses, language courses, driving licence courses, certification, nostrification of diplomas and examinations;
  • the cost of translation of documents;
  • accommodation in a dormitory for up to 12 months in the case of fixed studies;
  • public transport (for training lasting 1 period or more);
  • subscriptions to digital software and platforms required for learning and retraining.
