The winners of the Sakharov Prize 2025 were Belarusian political prisoner Andrzej Poczobut and Georgian writer Mzia Amaglobeli.

The winners were announced present by European Parliament president Robert Metsol at the European Parliament plenary meeting.

“Both are journalists who are presently in prison under fabricated charges only for doing their occupation and opposing injustice. Their courage made them symbols of the conflict for freedom and democracy," Metsola said.

In February 2023 writer Andrzej Poczobutt was sentenced to an 8-year penal colony with increased security. The trial was held behind closed doors. He was found guilty of inciting hostility and calling for sanctions. Pochobutt is punished in the colony in Nowopoleck.

The Andrei Sakharov Prize “For Freedom of Thought” was established in 1988. It is awarded annually by the European Parliament to those who have contributed “a unique contribution to the fight for human rights worldwide”.
