Knowledge of English in mainland China is falling, as confirmed by the latest ranking of English Proficiency Index 2023 developed by the global education company EF English First. China was ranked 82nd out of 113 countries. This means a crucial decrease of 20 positions compared to last year's ranking. The country has been classified in a low-level English language group, which is simply a major derogation since erstwhile years erstwhile it held 38th place and characterized by average proficiency in that language.
An crucial aspect is the fact that China has fallen to specified a low position despite compulsory English teaching already since kindergarten. Unfortunately, in schools, this language does not spend much time compared to another subjects specified as mathematics or native language, Chinese. Despite the decline in formal education, children proceed to learn English in schools, and adults make an effort to learn to communicate effectively abroad or to work in global companies.
