Moldovan abroad Minister Mihai Popșoi stated that Chisinau could put the issue of unification with Romania in a situation of threat to sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country from Russia.

Popșoi said on 20 January that Moldova must not "burden its head in the sand" in the face of an existential threat to the territorial integrity of the state and to the safety of its citizens, especially if Russia "come besides close to our borders, and indeed did so in 2014".

– Of course, if the situation got out of control and events were to happen in a way that straight threatens our existence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and the life and physical safety of our citizens, then specified decisions are made at the most hard moments," said the head of Moldovan diplomacy.

At the same time, Popșoi stressed that the decision to unite with Romania could only be taken by a majority of citizens.

– It is not a simple decision, and if it were simple, it would have been made long ago. It can only collapse with broad social support, regardless of the will or voice of individual politicians," said the minister.

Commenting on the erstwhile message by Moldovan president Mai Sandu, who declared support for the thought of unification with Romania, Popșoi stated that this is not, in fact, a fresh declaration.

When asked if he would have voted for Moldova's unification with Romania, the Minister replied that for people with Romanian citizenship the answer "should be obvious".

Prior to that, president Maia Sandu stated that if a referendum was held in the Republic of Moldova on unification with Romania, she would vote "in favour".

The August survey showed that the vast majority of Moldovan citizens argue the unification of the country with Romania, while around a 3rd of respondents support this idea.
