The EU Council and the European Parliament (EP) agreed on Wednesday a fresh proposal to extend duty-free imports of goods from Ukraine until 5 June 2025, adding further restrictions and the anticipation of an emergency suspension of imports into the EU of a number of agricultural products, including poultry, eggs, sugar, oats, maize, cereals and honey. At this point, it is worth noting the hypocrisy of Euro-Colchoz as regards the decision taken in the context of the introduced provisions on healthy food, alleged "green governance" and imports from Ukraine of agricultural products which will not be subject to these restrictions.

"The EU has decided to strengthen the protection of delicate agricultural products through enhanced safeguards to take account of any negative effects not only on the EU marketplace as a full but besides on the markets of 1 or more EU countries. A fresh emergency import suspension mechanics will be added for certain delicate products, including poultry meat, eggs, sugar, oats, maize, cereals and honey", the paper states.

The safeguard mechanics provides in peculiar for the imposition of duties on certain categories of goods imported from Ukraine if their volume exceeds the average import from the period 2022-2023.

The European Commission is besides committed to strengthening control over imports of wheat and another cereals from Ukraine.

The fresh paper must now be approved by the European Parliament at its April plenary session and by the Council of the EU, after which it will be published in the authoritative diary and will enter into force.

The current duty-free import agreement with Ukraine is valid until 6 June 2024.

Farmers' protests are presently taking place in the EU and the first of them started in 2019 in the Netherlands due to the tightening of green rules in the country. By 2023, protests had already spread to another countries, and by the end of the year they had spread to 12 countries. In addition to the green agenda, farmers are protesting the low prices of their products due to Ukrainian imports of goods, costly fertilizers and fuels and insufficient budget funding.
