The future of Polish K2 tanks

After fresh Year's, the transportation of K2 Black Panther tanks purchased under the second executive agreement will begin. At the same time, Polish plants will prepare to start national production of Polish-owned, better equipped version of K2PL. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that under the framework agreement 50% of all ordered tanks are to be created in Poland.

In late November, MP Przemysław Wipler sent an interpelling to the Minister of National Defence on the acquisition of K2/K2PL tanks for the armed forces. The Confederate MP asked for the participation of the Polish manufacture in the planned production of tanks, as mentioned in the framework agreement of 2022. He wanted to know whether the majority of deliveries from Polish plants were expected, or whether imported deliveries would proceed to be carried out as a precedence and how many product items included in the K2 tank components catalogue.

The reply, in accordance with the procedure, was given by Deputy Minister of Defence Paweł Bejda, who recalled that K2 were obtained on the basis of a framework agreement signed on 27 July 2022 as part of the Armed Forces Reinforcement Package for the years 2023–2025. The subject of this agreement is the acquisition of a full of 1000 K2GF tanks and the Polishized improvement version of K2PL, together with method safety vehicles, engineering support, accompanying bridges and another elements based on Polish solutions, as well as training and logistics package, ammunition supply and method support of the manufacturer.

Deputy Minister Bejda wrote that the establishment of the framework agreement was the division of K2 tanks delivered in proportions: 50% of tanks produced in South Korea and 50% of tanks produced in the Republic of Poland. The Armed Forces Agency, signing a framework agreement and 2 executive agreements, created the conditions for cooperation between the Polish defence manufacture and Korean entities.

Recently the last 180 K2GF tanks reached Poland purchased under the first executive agreement. The second executive agreement was signed in August 2025. It assumes purchase of another 180 tanks, including 64 in the Polishized version K2PL. 61 of them, on the another hand, will be created in the Gliwice plant “Bumar-Łabada” S.A.

According to the Deputy Minister Bejda's reply, the second implementing agreement planned a transfer of technology to let for the creation of a service, repair and repair facilities. Polish plants will receive, among others, specialist test tools and equipment and method documentation. Hyundai Rotem Company besides committed to technology transfer related to the production and assembly of the K2 tank and its components. The K2 tank parts catalog includes about 3800 positions.

Let us remind that under Framework Agreement No. 2 of August 2025, the Polish Army will receive 116 K2GF tanks from 2026 to 2027. Between 2028 and 2030 64 tanks will be created in the mark K2PL configuration, which will be in contrast to the wagons in the first configuration equipped with an active vehicle protection system, drone strategy and additional armor. In addition, K2PL tanks will be modified based on the conclusions of K2GF's erstwhile operation. The first 3 copies of K2PL will be produced in the Republic of Korea and will pass the tests due to changes in configuration.

Apart from tanks, the Polish army will besides receive a number of accompanying vehicles on the K2 chassis. The Polish Armed Forces Group, including the OBRUM, will be active in the plan work on them and Bumar-Łabada Mechanical Plant. The contract involves the production of 31 method safety wagons, 25 engineering wagons and 25 accompanying bridges. transportation is scheduled for 2029–2031.
