In the coming years, the military will receive further batches of K2 tanks in the GF version and in the fresh configuration – K2PL, and Polish companies will benefit from the transfer of technology and the acquisition of any tasks concerning, among others, repair of tanks and accompanying vehicles. MON reported that the production, repair and operation of specified vehicles can be carried out by up to a twelve national entities.
In early March, MP Przemysław Wipler (Confederation) sent an interpelled to the Ministry of Defence on the K2 tank programme and accompanying vehicles. The MP asked a series of questions, including whether Hyundai Rotem (K2 tank manufacturer) already has in its offer developed and implemented support vehicles, and why has MON not decided to commission the improvement of these vehicles to Polish R & D centres (e.g. OBRUM) or straight to European technological partners?
Let us remind you that under the agreement of 2022 with Hyundai Rotem The military has already received 180 K2GF tanks. The second executive agreement was signed in August 2025 and assumes that Poland will receive another 180 K2 tanks. final assembly 61 will take place at the Mechanical Plant “Bumar-Łabada”. In addition, the latest agreement provides for the transportation of 81 support vehicles on the K2 chassis (technical safety wagons, engineering vehicles, accompanying bridges).
Deputy Minister of Defence Paweł Bejda, responding to the interview, did not inform straight at what phase the programme for the improvement and production of accompanying vehicles for K2 is. However, he pointed out that the Hyundai Rotem Company has many years of experience in the production of accompanying vehicles on the K1 tank chassis and is conducting their continuous modernization. At the same time, he stated that the decision to get fresh tanks and associated vehicles based on the single platform from the Koreans allows the engagement of Polish defence manufacture entities in the design, production and securing of accompanying vehicles.
According to Paul Bejda's reply, elements, components and systems and peculiar equipment from many suppliers, both the Republic of Korea and Poland and another European countries, will be utilized in the production of fresh accompanying vehicles. The function of 3rd parties, as explained by Bejda, will be reduced to subcontracting, supplying the elements and equipment indicated and the essential technology. Hyundai Rotem – in accordance with the provisions of the agreement – is the main contractor liable for gathering the requirements set by the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland.
Paweł Bejda confirmed that thanks to the second executive agreement with the Korean concern, the essential production possible and the alleged MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) will be established at the “Bumar-Łabada” plant. Production possible means gaining the ability to assemble the final K2PL tanks (61 units since 2029). For this purpose, Hyundai Rotem will equip Polish plants with tools and production equipment. In addition, it is planned to transfer selected service and repair competences to another companies and institutions. The deputy chief of the MON informed that the Korean maker is presently conducting advanced talks with at least 11 entities of the Polish defence industry, concerning the creation and repair of systems, components and components for K2GF, K2PL and in the future for vehicles accompanying these vehicles.
