President of Barcelona Joan Laporta announced that the club intends to build a monument to Lionel Messi before the renovation of Camp Nou after nearly 900 days.
Laporta confirmed that the board is working on a permanent commemoration of the footballer. He emphasized that Messi deserves a peculiar tribute and should have a monument alongside specified legends as Cruyff or Kubala. However, he ruled out his return to the game, recalling his current contract with Inter Miami.
Messi, who went to Barcelona as a 13-year-old, scored 672 goals for the club and led it to many trophies, including 4 triumphs in the Champions League.
The decision came after Messi's emotional visit to the renovated stadium of Barcelona for the first time since his departure in 2021. With impressions from the visit, the footballer shared in social media, expressing the hope that he would "return" to Barcelona.
