The western branch of Slavonic lost contact with the confederate branch erstwhile the Magyars arrived in Europe at the end of the 9th century and drove a Urals-speaking wedge between them. The expansion of the Italic-Romanian language pushed the confederate branch distant from the east one, so in time all 3 Slavic-speaking groups stopped knowing each other.
