On Saturday 3 January 2026, prof. Andrzej Paczkowski died. He was a prominent Polish historian specializing in the past of the 20th century. He wrote hundreds of articles and books. He acted in "Solidarity", he was besides president of the Polish Union of Alpineism.


Professor Andrzej Paczkowski informed about the death of "Gazet Wyborcza". Historian was the author of many publications on PRL and martial law. Since 1980, he has been active in the creation of Solidarity. He died at the age of 87.

Andrzej Paczkowski graduated from the Historical Faculty of the University of Warsaw in 1960. In 1966, he defended his doctorate, and in 1975, he became a habilitated doctor. He worked at the Institute of Literary investigation of the Polish Academy of Sciences and then at the National Library and the Institute of past of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In the III Polish Republic, he became a associate of the College of the Institute of National Memory of 2 terms of office. He was a associate of the IPN Council until 2016.

In addition to technological work, he acted for the democratic opposition. Since September 1980 he was a associate of the NSZZ "Solidarity". During martial law, he published in "War Week" and "Mazovia Week".

– Whether Solidarity survives depends on many factors. First of all, from the social sentiments and from whether there will be adequate people active in the relation – not only will they join it, but they will besides want to become its leaders. Of course, I signed up immediately. Our Independent Local Labour Union of Science, Culture and Education only became part of Solidarity after a month. However, it never crossed my head that as many as 10 million people would join her in Poland. And that it will be led by people all over the country who will prove to be authentic leaders and play a historical function afterwards – he talked about "Solidarity".

Prof. Andrzej Paczkowski had a large literary achievements


Professor Paczkowski's technological achievements include hundreds of articles, but besides books, which are a canon for people who want to learn the past of Poland in the 20th century. The list of the most crucial works includes "Fourth Power. A 1973 press, "Stanisław Mikołajczyk, or the failure of a realist" from 1991 or "Polish-Jaruzel War" from 2006.

His last book, written in collaboration with Prof. Pawel Machcewicz, was published in 2021. It is called "Wine, Punishment, Politics. Settlements with planet War II crimes".
