Prof. Aleksandra Przegalińska: I signed the message on Superintelligence

raportcsr.pl 3 weeks ago

Prof. Aleksandra Przegalińska, 1 of the most recognized Polish experts on artificial intelligence (AI) signed the message on the improvement of superintelligence. As she said on social networks, she is little afraid about what artificial intelligence can become tomorrow, and more so about what it is today.

AI reality problems

Prof. Aleksandra Przegalinska he is, among others, the Vice-Rector for Cooperation with the abroad of the Kozminski Academy (ALK), advisor to Campus AI and associate of the investigation Council European University Institute. In the views presented concerning the improvement of artificial intelligence, he occupies a moderate, far from dystopian vision. She besides spoke about many advantages, though besides the risks of implementing AI in sustainable development, in early 2024 during the 3rd legislature of the ESC.

Now, as she said, she is afraid about the negative phenomena associated with the current state of usage of AI. In its entries enumerates, for example, the phenomena to be addressed, as they affect the labour market, among others. Or warns against flooding – “through Sora – power the net with a mass of AI sludge, generated with low value content (the same to which the door is to be ChatGPT)”. In 1 of the entries after counting the doubts, he asks: “I wonder, is that what the large generative revolution was all about? For a powerful meme device that will let even more effective mocking of others, mindlessly scrolling and – let's not fool ourselves – radicalize increasingly lonely people?

Today AI damages outweigh the benefits

Let us quote Prof. Przegalinska's entry on social networks on the signing of the Statement:

I never thought of myself as a disaster, but I signed a message on super intelligence due to the fact that my concerns are not about hypothetical future super intelligence, but the reality we already live in. I'm little afraid about what artificial intelligence can become next day and more afraid about what it is today. The endless flood of AI-generated content chokes the net we erstwhile knew. I am besides profoundly afraid about how easy minors can interact with AI systems that simulate empathy or feeling without having any real understanding. These simulations obscure emotional boundaries in a way that can be manipulative and Mentally harmful.

So no, I'm not signing for fear of upcoming superintelligence. I sign due to the fact that I want us to slow down, think about it and build the right safeguards.. I do not know what concrete effect specified a message will have, even if it is supported by many respected authorities. But I know 1 thing — Today, the harm caused by artificial intelligence outweighs its benefits. This is not the future I want.

I never considered myself a doomer, but I signed the message on Superintelligence, due to the fact that my concerns lie not with a hypothetical future superintelligence, but actually with the present. I’m little willing about what AI might become next day than about what it already is today.... pic.twitter.com/XwhSqtWVrV

What does the message on SuperIntelligence concern?

Here is the content of the statement:

Innovative tools based on artificial intelligence can bring unprecedented levels of wellness and prosperity. However, alongside these tools, many leading AI companies openly declare that in the coming decade they intend to make super-intelligent intelligence capable of importantly surpassing people in all essential cognitive tasks. This raises concerns — from the economical uselessness of man and the failure of cause, by restrictions on freedom, civilian rights, dignity and control, to threats to national safety and even the possible extinction of mankind.

The following concise message aims to make a common awareness of the increasing number of experts and public individuals who argue the rush towards super intelligence.

We call for a ban on the improvement of superintelligence, which will not be lifted until:

  • a broad technological consensus will not be reached that it will be safe and manageable, and
  • it will not receive strong public support.

How can you sign a statement?
