On the 80th anniversary of the Volynian Crime, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki participated in the celebration of the National Day of Memory of Victims of Genocide made by Ukrainian nationalists on citizens of the Second Republic. Volyn is inactive a closed wound in the past of our nations. In order to build a future together with Ukraine, we request to organize a painful past.
Genocide of Poles by UPA




Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki paid tribute to Poles who were murdered by the Ukrainian Insurgency Army. 80 years ago, UPA launched a coordinated attack on towns inhabited by Poles in Volyn.
That land witnessed an exceptional crime. She witnessed hell in hell, cooked by Ukrainian nationalists to her neighbors. This crime was so unique that it had to get its name – genocide. The genocide was terrible, cruel," the head of government pointed out.
Volynsk crime must be cleared to the end
After 80 years from the Volynian Crime, Poles want to find a place to remainder their ancestors to bury them worthy.
– Our Ukrainian neighbors and allies surely realize better present how crucial it is for us to find all place, all the remains, Christianly bury them, put up a cross, light a niche and pray. And we will not remainder until the last remains are found," said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
As the head of government explained, the substance of uncovering the remains of victims of the Volynský Crime is not only a Polish matter, but besides a Ukrainian one.
– There will be no Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation until the end, without uncovering all the remains and without celebrating them to the end," said the Prime Minister.
On the 80th anniversary of the Volynian Crimes, the head of the government besides placed flowers on the disc of the Unknown Soldier's Grave and before the monument of the 27th Volynian National Army Infantry Division.
Search for remains of victims of Volynsk Crime
For respective weeks, on the basis of arrangements with the Ukrainian side, the search continues for remains of victims of crimes in Puźniki in Buczacki district, where in February 1945 a band of UPA murdered about 100 Poles – mainly women and children.
On the Polish side, the work is conducted by experts from the Pomeranian Medical University and the Institute of National Memory. Over a hectare of land has already been explored and more than 500 wells and 80 excavations have been carried out. The search uses state-of-the-art equipment – georadars and magnetometric probes and metallic detectors. Work will proceed until then.
National Memorial Day of the Victims of Genocide
The Memorial Day of the Victims of Genocide was established by the Sejm in 2016. It commemorates the events of 11 and 12 July 1943, erstwhile the Ukrainian Pows dancing Army carried out a coordinated attack on towns inhabited by Poles in the erstwhile Volynsk region. UPA utilized the fact of gathering people in churches, on Sunday July 11. "Blood Sunday" is considered a highest minute of genocide by Ukrainian nationalists in Poles from 1943 to 1945. As a consequence of the genocide, about 100,000 Poles died in Volyn.
