On 2 May we celebrate Flag Day – a vacation established by the amendment of the Act on the emblem, colours and anthem of the Republic of Poland. In February 2004, the Sejm decided that the national symbol of the flag deserves its day on the calendar. The amendment abolished the restrictions imposed by the Polish People's Republic authorities at worktimes. Restrictions aimed at preventing protests against the then national power. The amendment standardized the legal state in specified a way that the usage of the national flag became possible not only during public holidays and in certain conditions, but in any situation with due reverence and respect.

Flag celebration is simply a day of symbolic significance, resembling our past and national tradition. Polish national colours date back to the Piast dynasty and are associated with Polish coat of arms – white eagle on a red background. The eagle appeared on coins already during the reign of Bolesław Chrobry. The colours of the Polish banner were not accidental: white symbolized spiritual purity and nobility, and red – fire and blood. White and red besides corresponded with the coat of arms of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
The white-red colour illustration was first utilized as a symbol of Poland in 1792, on the first anniversary of the Constitution's adoption on 3 May. The chronicles say that during the celebrations the contestants wore white dresses, girded with red ribbons, and high-ranking white-red sash officials. In this way, it was referred to Pogoni and the white eagle on a red background, which had been visible on royal banners since the mediate Ages. The formal acceptance of white and red as national colours took place only in 1831 by the Sejm of the Kingdom of Poland. On 2 May, he was chosen not accidentally for the flag festival: on that day in 1945, Polish soldiers participating in the capture of Berlin suspended the Polish flag on the Reichstag and on the column in Großer Tiergarten. Although scattered around the world, Poles always unite around white and red colors and always usage them proudly during holidays, patriotic celebrations or sports competitions.
