Donald Trump. Photo: PAP/EPAU.S. president Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he considered Antifa to be a terrorist organization. He besides recommended investigating people who financed the alleged anti-fascist movement.
"I am pleased to inform many American Patriots that I am qualifying ANTIFA, DISEASURE, SAFE, COUNCILALLY LEVIOUS CATASTROF, AS A crucial TERRORIST ORGANISATION. I will besides powerfully urge that people who fund ANTIFA be closely investigated, in accordance with the highest standards and legal practices," Trump wrote on his community portal fact Social. His entry was posted late at night British time, where the president of the United States is visiting.
The president has already signaled that he is in favour of this step, announcing actions against leftist organizations who blame for promoting political force and for killing activist Charlie Kirk.
Trump had already planned a akin step during his first word of office following the anti-police riots following George Floyd's death, but yet did not. This was, among others, the consequence of opposition within the administration, including erstwhile FBI chief Christopher Wray. Wray claimed that he could not consider any national organization to be terrorist due to the fact that it would violate the constitutional freedoms of members of these groups.
Critics besides pointed out that Antifa, an anti-fascist movement originating in Germany, is not a classical organization, but a loose collection of various groups without central structure and leaders.
It is unclear what Trump's announcement means in practice, due to the fact that there is no formal category of “significant terrorist organisation” in American law. (major terrorist organization), but only “foreign terrorist organization, FTO”. The inclusion on the FTO list gives the U.S. authorities extended opportunities to prosecute members of the organization – besides outside the US – for supporting their activities or backing them.
