President Karol Nawrocki declared his willingness to discuss helping people handle various matters, but rejected any solutions undermining the constitutional position of marriage. The speeches were delivered at a press conference after gathering with the Lithuanian president Gitanas Nauseda erstwhile he was asked about the draft law on partnerships presented by Lewica and PSL.
"No laws that undermine constitutional matrimony laws can gain my acceptance," Nawrocki stated. The president stressed that he would not sign any law that would "dispute the unique and constitutionally protected position of marriage", understood as a union between a female and a man.
President's terms of discussion
Nawrocki besides declared openness to talks about the position of the nearest person, but with clear limitations. The task must not "get close to the protected institution of marriage", the president has reserved.
"If we can aid people, regardless of their gender, regardless of their relationship, relationships, age, to deal with certain matters in Poland, I am open to specified a discussion" - he said. But he added, "But if we want to discuss any matrimony or ideological issues that are expected to hit the constitutional order of the Republic, I am not ready to do so."
Details of the government project
The leaders of the PSL and the Left presented on Friday the assumptions of the government's draft law on the position of the nearest individual and the joint life agreement. The proposed solutions let people to conclude contracts before a notary without changing their civilian status.
The task regulates property relations, housing and alimony rights and access to medical information. As announced, the contracting parties will decide their own content.
Political support and compromises
Urszula Pasławska of PSL assured that the task excludes worldview issues and takes into account "different sensitivity". He omits issues related to children - adoption and care - and besides "does not violate in any way or harm the institution of marriage".
Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz (PSL) assessed that the task had a chance to gain broad support in the Sejm, besides on the "right side of the Sejm room". "We are ready to talk to parliamentarians, citizens and the president," said the head of PSL.
Pasławska added that the contract could be treated as a premarital agreement and that matrimony would automatically terminate it. She besides pointed out that the presented task has no final form, and its creators are open to dialog with the President. The bill will replace the draft law on partnerships published last October.
