As president of the Republic of Poland, I feel obliged present and have signed a legislative initiative to make the day 28 June in the Polish calendar the Day of Anti-Communist Opposition activists and People Represented for Political Reasons said Karol Naworcki during the celebrations.
As he stressed, this date would become a symbol of all the most crucial protests against the communist authorities – from Poznań June 1956, through the events of March 1968 and December 1970, to the strikes of June 1976 and the activity of the solidarity opposition in the 1980s. He hoped that the initiative would gain support over political divisions and be adopted by Parliament. He besides called for joint action to establish a vacation dedicated to the militants of the anti-communist opposition.
Violent suppression of protest
In his speech Nawrocki assessed that after the end of planet War II Poland was under the domination of the russian Union, but thanks to the opposition of the society it was not possible to break the spirit of the nation or take distant its attachment to freedom.
11 years after the next business of the Polish Republic of Poznań, there was a clear signal that the arrogant Polish nation carries a commitment to dignity, freedom and sovereignty, and Polish, Wielkopolska, Poznań workers from Cegielski and another workplaces, besides (...) students who joined these protests are ready to defend what is most crucial for Poles: dignity, freedom and independency of the Polish Republic said the President.
On June 28, 1956, employees of the Poznań Cegielski Plant, then named Stalin, began a general strike and went on the streets of the city. The protest was brutally suppressed by the militia and the military. According to IPN findings, at least 58 people were killed as a consequence of clashes and respective 100 injured.
The president turned to another countries
Nawrocki besides addressed global safety issues, utilizing the presence of abroad delegations. He pointed out that the countries of Central and east Europe, due to their own historical experience, are best aware of the risks posed by Russia.
It is us in Poland, Albania, Latvia, Hungary, the Czech Republic and all the Baltic countries who are obliged to build a large wall of democracy, work for European civilization and the safety of our region Nawrocki stressed.
