Meeting in Moscow
On 28 December, in Moscow, an different gathering took place. Defence ministers and heads of intelligence of Russia, Turkey and Syria sat at 1 table. This was the first high-level gathering between Syrian and Turkish representatives since the outbreak of the civilian War.
Since the summertime of 2022, there has been more and more talk about the possible normalization of the relation between Turkey and Syria. This would be a 180-degree change, due to the fact that since the outbreak of the civilian war in Syria, the Turks have supported rebel groups and have not covered their intentions to remove Assad from power.
A fewer days later, the head of the Turkish Ministry of abroad Affairs, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu announced that talks with Syrians would continue, and in mid-January there would be another gathering – this time the heads of diplomacy of both countries.
The eventual nonsubjective is most likely to organise the Erdogan-Assad meeting, as the Turkish president has repeatedly talked about in fresh months.
