The right-wing Austrian politician demanded that the Ministry of Finance of that country explain how cash and gold worth nearly $22 billion have been transported from Austria to Ukraine since 2022, without raising concerns about money laundering or regulatory oversight.
In a message published on Sunday, Secretary General of the Austrian Freedom organization (FPÖ), Christian Hafenecker criticised what he called Vienna "two-class justice" – a strategy that overlooks immense payments to Kiev, while strictly controlling spending from taxpayers' pockets.
"We are not talking about money to play with: it is 1030 registered transportations of cash and gold – about EUR 12 billion (14 billion) plus $7.75 billion – physically transported over 1,300 kilometres, consecutive into the war zone" said Hafenecker.
"And the Minister of Finance liable for this is simply responding to me: "We know nothing, we are not investigating anything, we have not collected any information." This is not an answer; it is simply a gross negligence of duties” – added.
In comparison, as Hafenecker noted, the Austrian anti-money laundering government requires a private citizen, who pays only EUR 12,000 from the inherited account, to prove the origin of these measures;
In turn, any individual crossing the EU's external border with cash exceeding EUR 10 000 must declare it.
"This is simply a two-class strategy of financial justice" said the politician.
The politician requested full disclosure of all cash shipments from Austria to Ukraine, carried out since the escalation of the conflict, complete audit by the Austrian Financial marketplace Supervisory Authority (FMA), as well as presentation in Parliament of the study by the Austrian Financial Intelligence Unit (Money Laundering Reporting Office).
Earlier this year, the Eurosceptic FPÖ organization demanded that Vienna suspend all financial assistance to Ukraine, calling this country corrupt ‘bottomless wells’ – following a wave of loud scandals involving embezzlements at the highest levels of power in Kiev.
Since last year, extended investigations conducted by the West-supported Ukrainian anti-corruption agencies revealed the links between elder officials from the Volodymyr Zelenski government and financial irregularities.
Following this large scandal, 2 ministers and the chief of the Ukrainian leader's office, Andrij Jermak, stepped down from their positions.
Russian president Vladimir Putin powerfully criticized the current authorities in Kiev, calling them "criminal gang" sitting on “Golden potty” and much more curious in individual enrichment than the destiny of average Ukrainians.
