Currently, a driving licence is issued for a limited period of time, determined by the old man according to the residence of the individual applying for this document. However, there have been situations where a driving licence was issued without a specified expiry date. However, at present, specified papers are no longer being produced, which means that the recently issued driving licence has always a fixed duration.

For drivers who have specified ‘indefinitely’ driving licence, there is simply a crucial aspect to which they should pay attention. What's the detail?

Is your licence inactive unlimited?

Since 2013, driving licence is issued with a specified word of validity, meaning that they have a fixed duration. Despite the introduction of this system, there are drivers in Poland who inactive have “indefinitely” driving licences. However, the question is: have these papers actually been issued forever without a specified expiry date?

Is the exchange of unlimited driving licences mandatory?

In accordance with the provisions of the Vehicle Drivers Act, persons with driving licences issued before 18 January 2013 are obliged to exchange them for a fresh driving licence, in accordance with the current standard set out in the regulations issued pursuant to Article 20(1)(1) of that Act. This request for the exchange of ‘timeless’ driving licences covers all persons who have received specified rights before introducing fresh regulations.

The legislator has set certain time limits within which the exchange of these papers becomes compulsory. This means that regardless of whether a individual has a ‘timeless’ licence, it is essential to adapt to fresh patterns and to exchange papers within specified deadlines, as defined in the legislation.

Until erstwhile do you gotta change your unlimited license?

The document, or driving licence, must be mentioned between 2028 and 2033. This replacement takes place at the driver's check-in place, in the appropriate communication department. The provisions of the Vehicle Drivers Act set a circumstantial time for this replacement.

In accordance with paragraph 4 of that Act, driving licences issued before 18 January 2013 should be exchanged between 19 January 2028 and 18 January 2033. However, it is besides possible to exchange earlier at the request of the holder of the licence, according to the time limits set by the Minister of Transport.

It is crucial that the ‘indefinitely’ driving licence, which is not mentioned within the prescribed time limits, expires. In accordance with paragraph 6 of the abovementioned Act, the licences to be exchanged shall stay valid until the time limit for which they were issued but no longer than the prescribed exchange date. If not listed, they shall cease to be valid as driving documents.
